Lead Presenter Biographies


Cindy Lazenby RN – Facilitator 
Cindy is the owner and Program Coordinator of Foot Care Kingston and a foot care nurse in Kingston, Ontario. She currently holds the position of Ontario Provincial Advisor for the Canadian Association of Nursing Foot Care, and was the founding Chair of this association. She has a strong health care clinical and administrative background in gerontology and palliative care. Involved with nursing foot care since 1990 and teaching it since 1993, Cindy's passion for education was driven by her goal to advance nursing foot care in Canada. She continues to be the "spark” that unites Canada’s growing foot care nurse community.

              
Tania Bell RN – Wound Care Series
Tania is a shareholder of Health Team Holdings Corporation and provides  private nursing services in Wound, Ostomy and Foot Care in British Columbia.  In addition she has done contract work with the BC Health Authorities, her most recent role was as a Clinical Lead for the Telewound Care Project. She has a strong health care background complemented by continued growth through additional studies in wound care and other health-related knowledge, and has been providing foot care for approximately 12 years. In 2012, Tania completed the Foot Care Nurse Educators Program and continues to be involved with Foot Care Kingston's continuing education programs.

James E. Deacon MD – Diabetes SeriesJames’s medical practice is focused on medical foot care in general with a special emphasis on diabetic foot care and lower limb wound care. He works in a clinic setting with a team of three other physicians and nine nurses. He also provides medical care to nursing home and retirement home patients. His professional roles include Assistant Professor to the Adjunct Academic staff in the Department of Family Medicine at Queen's University in Kingston, Fellow the College of Family Physicians of Canada, Fellow of the American Professional Wound Care Association and Fellow of the Academy of Physicians in Wound Healing.


Michelle Matthews RN, CDE – Diabetes SeriesMichelle Is a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Diabetes Education & Management Centre in Kingston Ontario. She works with adults living with all types of diabetes, utilizing a wide variety of self-management support strategies ranging from lifestyle intervention to insulin pump therapy. Michelle has a keen interest in the prevention of diabetic foot ulcers. She has recently completed a project with the South East Ontario Regional Diabetes Coordination Centre that educates primary healthcare providers about increasing diabetes foot screening and improves awareness of foot care resources in the region. Michelle continues to be involved in this initiative and is currently part of a team at Hotel Dieu Hospital where she works to implement the Registered Nurses of Ontario Best Practice Guideline: Reducing Foot complications for People with Diabetes, 2004/2011.

Jim Gauthier, MLT, CIC – Infection Control SeriesJim is a Medical Laboratory Technologist with 18 years of microbiology experience, which overlaps with his 23 years of infection control experience. Jim was certified in infection control (CIC) in 1990 with successful recertification every five years. Jim has experiencein acute care, long term care, community care, mental health, medical and dental clinics, schools, funeral homes and industry. He is known as an engaging and humorous speaker and tells way too many stories!
Linda Deschamps, C. Ped (C) – Footwear and Orthotics SeriesLinda has been active in the pedorthic community for many years. In 1988, she graduated in Kinesiology from Waterloo University and shortly thereafter became a Certified Pedorthist in Canada (C Ped, (C)). She has held several board positions within the Pedorthic Association of Canada (PAC). She won the prestigious Michael Van Vlack Memorial Leadership Award in 2012 for her proven leadership and exceptional commitment to PAC and to the pedorthic profession as well as to her family and community. More recently, she was a task force leader in the publication of PAC’s celebrated Clinical Practice Guidelines reference manual. Linda is also an instructor with Western University's award-winning diploma program in pedorthics and currently teaches one of seven online courses, Footwear and Footwear Modifications. Linda continues to practice pedorthics day-to-day in her busy Stand Your Ground clinic (providing orthotics, footwear, bracing), located in Kingston, Ontario. She is an avid guest lecturer for local groups and educational institutions. Personally, Linda remains active as a wife, mother and sports participant.
